Tropical Storms: Rina Getting Stronger; Philippe Weakening

At 500 AM AST (0900 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Rina was located near latitude 18.9 North, longitude 46.6 West. Rina is moving toward the north-northwest near 5 mph (7 km/h). A northwestward to west-northwestward motion, with a slight increase in forward speed, is expected for the next few days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Slight strengthening is forecast later today, followed by little change in intensity through Saturday. Gradual weakening is expected to begin Sunday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km) from the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1003 mb (29.62 inches).

Swells generated by Philippe will affect portions of the Atlantic coasts of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through the weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
